Dear Mr. Anderson,

1 am a biochemist at Michigan State University, and my hobby is studying
the history of numismatics, coin collecting. I recently read The Day They
Shook The Plum Tree by Arthur Lewis about the Howland fortune and its
final dispersal in the early 1950's. Col. E.H.R. Green, who had control
of the Howland fortune from 1916 until 1936, apparently purchased huge
numbers of fabulous coins starting around 1910 until shortly before he
died in 1936. I read in Plum Tree that you were involved in the Green
Estate case before a Special Master of the U.S. Supreme Court in
establishing where Col. Green was for every day of his life from Jan. 1,
1900 until he died in 1936. I have a copy of the Supreme Court decree
that stated that Massachusettes, rather that Florida, New York, or Texas
could levy state taxes on the Green estate. I would like to get a copy of
the testimony heard by the special master which should include, as I
understand, copies of Col. Green's correspondence with coin dealers and
other coin collectors. I would also like to get a copy of any appraisal
made by a professional coin dealer of the Green estate. Do you have any

idea of where such documents could be seen or acquired?

Part of my hobby is collecting old coin catalogues. I find it interesting
that fabulous public auctions of U.S. coin were frequently held until

around 1915, then a hiatus of thirty years during the time when Col. Green

bought his coins, then several gigantic sales were held starting in 1946,
three years after a great number of coins from the Green estate were sold
privately by Burdette G. Johnson of St. Louis. But no auction sale of
coins from the Green collection was ever held. Do you know if Col.

Green's sister, Mrs. Sylvia Wilkes, kept a collection of coins for herself
after the colonel died?

Any assistance in establishing the prior or later owners of Col. Green's
coins would be greatly appreciated.
